Do you love where you work, but wish you had a different position? You like the company culture. The office is in a convenient location. You get along with your coworkers—and yet, you don’t feel passionate about your current job. If this sounds familiar, consider trying to switch to a new job title without leaving the company you love. There are a few things you can do to make sure you’re taking a step in the right direction.  

Start on the right foot. 

First, if there is a new position that interests you, make sure you have the skills and experience that make you a good candidate. You have an advantage over external applicants, because you can actually see what the position entails. Talk to others who are currently working in that role to see if it is something you actually would be qualified for and interested in. Consider talking to the HR Department to look at the specifics of the job description. 

Don’t step on anyone’s toes. 

Before you tell others about your interest in a new position, be sure to clear it with your current supervisor first. Without being negative, let your manager know that you are grateful for your current job and love the company, but that you would like to learn more about the new position. Be sure to communicate how your skills would be a better fit for the new department. Regardless of whether or not you are able to switch jobs, make sure that you’re performing well in your current role. Managers want employees who work hard whether or not they’re in their dream job. 

Step up to the new position. 

Once you’re sure that the new position would be a good fit, and you’ve cleared it with your immediate supervisor, then it’s time to get to work. Treat this opportunity like any other; try not to be casual about the application process merely because you work there. Even though you are already at company, you shouldn’t assume that you are going to get the new position. Be professional and follow procedure—submitting a cover letter, resume, and thank you notes. Don’t be surprised if you have to interview for the new role, too. 

It’s important to remember to always do your best—even if you aren’t in your perfect job yet, it could be a stepping stone to one you will love. Just take it one step at a time, and eventually you’ll find yourself in that dream job.
