The Fourth of July is a time for celebrations, family, and fireworks, but if you’re worried about finding a job, it might be difficult to get in the festive spirit. Put your mind at rest by knowing you’re prepared for that next interview. Read below for some tips on how to answer some of the most commonly asked interview questions. 

Tell me a little about yourself. 

An employer might start the interview with this question. While it seems simple, it can seem overwhelming to know where to start for an answer. Don’t share your whole life story, or talk about every item on your resume. Your answer should give a brief overview of your past and present employment, with a couple examples of specific accomplishments. This question gives you a great chance to sell yourself for the position.  

What are your goals? 

Some interviewers may ask similar questions, such as, “Where would you like to be in five years?” Think about this question in advance, and be honest about your goals. Your answer will reveal if you have ambition and realistic expectations about the future. Make sure that you express goals that match up with the job you’re applying for. It’s okay to say something like, “I’m not sure exactly where I’d like to be in five years, but I’d like a position in (fill in the blank) industry where I can pursue my passion of…” 

Why do you want to work here? 

Even if it’s the first thing that comes to mind, “Because I need a job, and you have an opening,” is not a good answer. Make sure you have researched the company and the position you are applying for. This question gives you an opportunity to show off your knowledge. Maybe you have worked in other positions in the industry, and this business is a leader in the field. Give a detailed answer that lets the interviewer know you have thought about why you want to work with them.  

What is your biggest weakness? 

This might be one of the hardest questions to answer, but don’t be nervous! It’s okay to be honest. Consider both your strengths and weaknesses before the interview. Don’t just say what you think the interviewer wants to hear. Name a true weakness you have, but speak positively about it, and talk about what you are doing to improve it. Try not to list a weakness that would make you unsuited for the job. For instance, if you are applying for a position that requires you to be detail oriented, don’t say that one of your weaknesses is paying attention to detail. 

Why should we hire you? 

With this question, you want to make sure you are both summarizing your own qualifications, as well as stating the attributes that set you apart from other candidates. Many job seekers answer this question by saying they are hard workers. This is a great quality, but not specific enough. Instead, discuss your past accomplishments, and how your talents could improve the company. Make sure you are sharing what you can contribute to the business, not how the job could help you.
